After a disappointing December, where only nine out of thirty-four sectors made gains, January was much more encouraging.
It started slowly, and faced a few setbacks along the way, but by the end of the month most of the major stock markets around the world had risen. Some, including the FTSE 100, recorded new all-time highs.
Nearly all of the Investment Association sectors followed suit, with thirty-two making gains. The only exceptions were UK Smaller Companies and India/Indian Subcontinent.
The star performers were the Latin America sector, up 11.3%, followed by the European excluding UK sector, which rose by 7.7%. The Financial & Financial Innovation, Healthcare, and Europe including UK sectors, all went up by 7.2%.
Both of our demonstration portfolios have also had good start to the year. The Tugboat is up 1.9%, while the Ocean Liner has risen by 3.0%.
